The 41st NSW Paper Tiger Catamaran State Championship
The 2012 NSW Paper Tiger Catamaran State Titles were at Wagga Wagga Sailing Club, October 1,2 2011.

The State Titles were held in light variable winds, which challenged all of the skippers. It was very difficult to determine which path to take, and to avoid the holes of no wind.
Congratulations to State Champion Garry Williams, who has now won 21 of the 41 State Titles held. Garry was consisently fast, mostly went the right way, and was able to recover from any rare mistakes.
2nd place went to Rohan Nicol, a Wagga Wagga local, who had incredible off-wind speed, and who as able to make several brave moves pay off. For example, he was seen gliding over the glassy waters, sailing around the fleet to come from mid-field to 2nd place in Race 3.
In 3rd place was Cameron Fitzgerald, also a Wagga Wagga local, who was consistently at the front of the fleet. Cameron won the B division.

2010-11 New South Wales Paper Tiger Catamaran State Pointscore
Congratulations to Neil Waterman for eating ALL the purple people to win the season's traveler series, the NSW PTCA State Pointscore.
2nd place, by 1 point, was Ian Marcovitch, who had the Mojo to win 3 of the regattas.
I scored 3rd place on Tigerdelic. Yeah baby, yeah!
In 4th place Steve Halliday on Dipsi Danis, just 1 point behind me for the 2nd year in a row. But luck mate!
5th place was well played by Ralph Skea on Solitaire, also just 1 point further back.
6th went to Max Dogger on the Mystery Tiger, who said he was mystified by this great result! With 4 of 6 results to count, the lower finishing entrants only competed in 3 or less regattas. You have to be in it, to win it.

2011 New South Wales Paper Tiger Catamaran State Championships

January 29-30, Koonawarra Bay Sailing Club, Lake Illawarra, Wollongong NSW

The 40th Paper Tiger Catamaran NSW Championships were won by Greg Williams, just 2 points ahead of his father Garry. They both sailed boats they had built themselves, and won through excellent tactical decision making as well as superb boat speed. Greg has now won the State Titles 3 times, while Garry has previously won an incredible 20 times.
The series was held at Koonawarra Bay Sailing Club, on Lake Illawarra near Wollongong, with volunteers from Port Kembla Sailing Club running the races. They generously offered their time "to support sailing", which allowed all of the host club sailors to contest the event. The fleet of 24 boats was the largest seen at a Paper Tiger state titles since 1994.
The weather offered the full range of conditions, including shifty light winds and full blast seabreezes. It was important to choose the best side of the course when sailing upwind, in order to get the favoured direction and strength of the wind. The Williams were faultless in their decision making. In the stronger winds the Paper Tigers were spectacular, with the windward hull flying, spray jetting out like a fire-hose and skippers hiking out as far as they could get. The Williams were again faultless, with superb boat handling and sail trim.
3rd place went to Koonawarra Bay local David Stumbles. Last year's winner Kim Marcovitch finished 6th, while his father and International Champion Ian Marcovitch finished 8th. "B Grade" division was won by Tony Hastings.

2009/10 NSW Paper Tiger Catamaran State Regatta Point Score
    Report by Tony Hastings

Otherwise known as the Traveller's Trophy, this series included:

The Mannering Park regatta was also the Windrush NSW State Titles, but amongst the 32 entrants only the local Paper Tigers raced. It was described as a good regatta, despite the lack of wind, with congratulations offered to Ian Marcovitch, 1st Paper Tiger and winner overall.

The YMCA Canberra Multihull was held in highly variable, mostly very light, winds. The club set interesting figure 8 courses, which worked well because no matter what direction the wind swung to, there were still windward legs, downwind legs, and reaches. Being an ultra-lightweight skipper helped me win 5 of 6 races, while Steve Halliday consistently sailed well and gaining ground when stronger puffs came through. Neil Waterman sailed well to win a race on an association owned boat, with, er, interesting design features.

What the previous regattas lacked in wind, Port Kembla made up for. Paper Tigers generally call off racing in 22knots wind, most clubs and other classes call it off at 25 knots, but when it gusted over 30 at Kembla, the race continued. There was spectacular action all over the course, as Nacras, Taipans, A-class, PTs and others all flew around at top speed, then flew in the air as they catapulted, or had massive damage in high impact collisions. Best PT was local Ralph Steadman, with good consistent results, while Ian Marcovich won both races he contested. Dave Stumbles showed he's a good a sailor as he is an event organiser by winning Race 1. I took over 2 hours to finish race 2 (the windiest), amazingly claiming a win as no other PTs finished.

The State Titles at Toronto was another light wind weekend, at which Ian and Kim Marcovich demonstrated the art of "sailing in the pressure". The series demanded good tactical decision making, in finding wind and advantageous shifts, avoiding holes, racing the other PTs, and avoiding other fleets of boats sharing the lake.

The Koonawarra Bay 14ft cat regatta was held in the worst weather of the series, with very light winds and showers, followed by rain. Maricat Sailor Chris Zahra won all 4 races. Amongst PTs, Wayne Eager sailed brilliantly to claim the series win, with Ian Marcovich making it a very close battle. Again I frustrated the hell out of Steve by using a lightweight's boatspeed to repeatedly overtake after a series of tactical blunders. Ralph was left wondering how to set a new sail with the tell-tales glued down in the rain, while sympathy went to Dave, Neil, Jon and the crew who gave up sailing to staff the rescue boats.

Congratulations to NSW PTCA State Pointscore winner: Ian Marchovitch, sailing "Mojo". Rarely beaten in any race all season Ian was a very deserving winner.
I demonstrated the value of finishing races no matter what weather or gear failures occur, claiming 2nd place on "Tigerdelic". The generally light winds of the series helped win this result.
On equal points in 3rd Place was Steve Halliday on "Dipsi Danis", who sailed excellent tactical races.
